BREAKING NEWS
The Greek Cypriot Administration has reportedly entered a new defense procurement process with France as part of its effort to modernize its land forces. According to the report, the administration has started discussions under the European Union’s SAFE (Security Action for Europe) financing mechanism for the acquisition of around 180 French armored vehicles, as well as the modernization of vehicles already in service. The move stands out as another sign that Southern Cyprus is increasingly turning toward European defense solutions in its force modernization strategy.
At the center of the talks are 80 Griffon 6x6 armored personnel carriers and 100 Serval 4x4 tactical armored vehicles, both expected to be supplied by French defense giant KNDS. These platforms are not only intended for standard troop transport missions, but are also being considered for specialized roles, including anti-tank operations. In this context, some of the vehicles may be equipped with MBDA’s AKERON MP medium-range anti-tank guided missile system. Such a configuration would significantly enhance the operational flexibility and firepower of Greek Cypriot ground units.
The planned deal does not appear to be limited to the purchase of new-generation armored vehicles. Another key element under discussion is the modernization of the current VAB 6x6 armored vehicle fleet by French company Arquus. This indicates that Southern Cyprus is pursuing a broader force renewal effort, combining the introduction of new platforms with the upgrade of legacy systems already in inventory. The approach suggests a strategy aimed at maintaining operational continuity while also improving battlefield capability in a cost-effective manner. The SAFE program is expected to play an important role in providing the financial backing for this initiative.
This development is also seen as part of a wider trend in which Southern Cyprus has been moving away from Russian-origin military equipment and leaning more heavily toward European—particularly French—defense products. In earlier steps, the administration decided to replace its Russian-made Mi-35 Hind attack helicopters with Airbus H145M helicopters and also pursued cooperation with France on the Mistral 3 air defense system. With the latest armored vehicle initiative, it now appears that the same orientation is extending into land force modernization. As a result, this procurement effort is likely to be closely monitored in the context of the evolving security balance in the Eastern Mediterranean.
