BREAKING NEWS
South Korean defense giant Hyundai Rotem has announced plans to establish a new production facility in Poland dedicated to manufacturing the 8×8 wheeled Next-Generation Armored Vehicle (N-WAV). This development follows the official unveiling of the N-WAV during the ADEX 2023 Aerospace and Defense Exhibition in Seoul, held in October 2023. The move is seen as a major step in strengthening defense cooperation between South Korea and Poland while expanding Hyundai Rotem’s influence in the European defense market.
The N-WAV has been designed to meet the demands of modern battlefields with its advanced technological features. Measuring 9.1 meters in length, 3.1 meters in width, and weighing approximately 35 tons, the vehicle combines robust protection with versatile combat capabilities. The Infantry Fighting Vehicle (IFV) configuration showcased at ADEX 2023 was equipped with a Northrop Grumman Mk44 Bushmaster II 30 mm automatic cannon, as well as 12.7 mm and 7.62 mm machine guns and anti-tank missile launchers. Additionally, the N-WAV can be configured with a 120 mm gun and an autoloader, enabling it to provide heavier fire support on the battlefield.
Different variants of the N-WAV are tailored to various operational needs. The IFV version accommodates a crew of 3+8 soldiers, while the Armored Personnel Carrier (APC) variant offers additional seating for two more infantry troops. Its welded steel hull supports modular armor upgrades and is complemented by an active protection system. Powered by a 700-horsepower diesel engine coupled with a fully automatic transmission, the N-WAV delivers impressive mobility. Furthermore, the vehicle has amphibious capabilities, supported by a trim vane and telescopic snorkel system, allowing it to cross water obstacles with ease.
Hyundai Rotem’s decision to build a manufacturing facility in Poland targets not only Poland’s defense needs but also the broader regional market. Potential buyers include former Warsaw Pact nations such as Hungary and Bulgaria, as well as countries beyond Europe, including Chile in Latin America. Analysts emphasize that this strategic move could enhance South Korea’s position in the global defense industry and reshape regional security dynamics in Europe.
