BREAKING NEWS
Türkiye is set to take a major step forward in its defense capabilities with the induction of the SIPER Long-Range Air Defense System into the Turkish Air Force in 2024. Jointly developed by ASELSAN, ROKETSAN, and TÜBİTAK SAGE, the system will play a critical role in protecting strategic facilities and strengthening national air defense.
SIPER is regarded as a milestone in Türkiye’s air defense strategy, featuring long-range engagement, high-altitude capability, and a distributed architecture. ASELSAN General Manager Ahmet Akyol announced that the system successfully completed its live-fire trials, passed acceptance tests, and is now ready for delivery. Designed with Türkiye’s unique geopolitical position and regional security needs in mind, SIPER offers a cutting-edge solution for modern air defense.
The system incorporates advanced features such as vertical launch capability, dual-pulse rocket motors, and state-of-the-art seeker heads. Equipped with both an Active Radar Seeker (RF) and an Imaging Infrared (IIR) seeker, SIPER can detect and engage enemy targets with high precision. Initially, it will be deployed with the ÜRÜN-1 missile, which has a range exceeding 100 kilometers. Future upgrades will introduce the ÜRÜN-2 missile with a range surpassing 150 kilometers, further enhancing its effectiveness.
One of SIPER’s most significant advantages is its adaptability for naval platforms, extending Türkiye’s air defense capabilities beyond its borders. Additionally, the system has been upgraded with anti-ballistic missile defense features, giving Türkiye a stronger and more comprehensive air defense structure.
Defense analysts emphasize that SIPER will complete the missing long-range tier of Türkiye’s layered air defense system, increasing deterrence on both regional and global scales. The program is seen as a cornerstone in Türkiye’s quest for greater self-reliance and technological independence in defense.
