BREAKING NEWS
Şimşek, one of the most versatile platforms in Türkiye’s defense industry, is rapidly evolving into a system capable of playing far more critical roles than originally planned. Developed initially as a target drone for testing national air defense missiles, Şimşek soon transformed into a platform that could also function as a GPS-guided, long-range strike asset. Today, the project is entering a new phase, as efforts to push Şimşek beyond its current 450-knot speed into the supersonic range continue.
Experts emphasize that achieving supersonic speeds will dramatically change the nature of test and training activities. Currently, Türkiye’s air defense systems—such as HİSAR, GÖKDOĞAN, BOZDOĞAN and SİPER—are designed to counter supersonic threats, yet most tests are still conducted against subsonic target drones. This creates gaps in understanding how these systems would truly perform under high-speed, real-world conditions. With the supersonic Şimşek developed by TUSAŞ, Türkiye will finally be able to test its missiles against targets that reflect the actual performance of modern combat aircraft and missiles.
Another major advantage of Şimşek is that it is not merely a target drone—it is a multifunctional unmanned aerial vehicle. Thanks to its modular payload capacity, it can carry radar signature enhancers, strike warheads, or electronic warfare packages. This allows Şimşek to be used as a decoy in complex operations. In swarm configurations, Şimşek units could overwhelm enemy air defenses, making it difficult for hostile operators to distinguish real threats from decoys. If a version with an F-16-like radar signature and speed is deployed, adversaries may struggle to decide which target to engage, potentially exhausting their missile inventory and compromising their defensive posture.
The expanding capabilities of Şimşek also boost its export potential. As high-technology target drones are limited globally, Türkiye’s rapidly advancing product family meets a crucial need for militaries seeking realistic training and testing solutions. Since modern armed forces rely heavily on realistic field training rather than simulations alone, Şimşek stands out as a valuable tool that fills an important operational gap.
