BREAKING NEWS
Poland has achieved a major milestone in defense exports through its leading defense group PGZ and its subsidiary Mesko, as Norway selected the Piorun MANPADS after a two-year evaluation process. This historic agreement provides Norway with its first-ever man-portable air defense capability, representing a significant enhancement to its national security.
The contract, signed in November 2022 between the Norwegian Defence Materiel Agency (NDMA) and Mesko, is valued at approximately €30 million, according to Norwegian media. Brigadier General Jarle Nergård, Head of NDMA’s Air Systems Division, emphasized that the Piorun system offered the best balance in terms of timing, performance, and cost. Outperforming its competitors in functionality and cost-effectiveness, Piorun is expected to play a vital role in strengthening Norway’s defense capabilities.
Mesko highlighted that the deal was secured following a transparent tender process overseen by NDMA. The agency confirmed that Piorun MANPADS fully met the operational and technical requirements of the Norwegian Armed Forces.
The Piorun MANPADS is designed for low-altitude air defense, capable of engaging targets up to 4,000 meters. It can effectively neutralize aircraft, helicopters, drones, and guided rockets. With its modernized launcher, operators can also deploy the system effectively during nighttime operations, expanding its tactical utility.
For Poland, this deal marks a key achievement in defense exports, while for Norway, it symbolizes the beginning of a new era in air defense capabilities.
