BREAKING NEWS
Northrop Grumman, one of the leading defense companies in the United States, has officially started full-rate production of the Mk44 Stretch Bushmaster Chain Gun for the US Marine Corps’ next-generation Amphibious Combat Vehicles (ACVs). The production milestone marks a significant step in strengthening the firepower and combat effectiveness of Marine Corps ground forces, particularly in expeditionary and amphibious operations.
The 30mm Mk44 Chain Gun will be integrated into the Kongsberg-produced remote weapon turret mounted on the ACV-30 variant. This configuration allows Marines to operate the weapon system under armor protection while benefiting from advanced targeting, stabilization, and engagement capabilities. Designed to support all NATO-standard 30x173mm ammunition, the Mk44 delivers extended range, consistent accuracy, and reliable performance. The system is also compatible with advanced ammunition developed by Northrop Grumman, further enhancing lethality on the battlefield.
One of the key advantages of the Mk44 system is its modular design. With the replacement of the barrel and select components, the weapon can be upgraded to a 40mm caliber, offering future growth potential and mission adaptability. This flexibility ensures the weapon system can evolve alongside changing operational requirements and emerging threats.
Commenting on the development, Dave Fine, Vice President of Armament Systems at Northrop Grumman, emphasized the system’s proven reliability in harsh environments. He stated that integrating the Mk44 Bushmaster into the Amphibious Combat Vehicle program provides Marines with a decisive advantage and the tools needed to maintain battlefield dominance against evolving adversaries.
The Mk44 production initiative supports the US Marine Corps’ broader ACV procurement program. In 2023, the Marine Corps awarded BAE Systems a $256.8 million contract for additional vehicles, including $145.3 million for 25 personnel carrier variants and $111.5 million for more than 15 combat variants. The introduction of the Mk44 Chain Gun is expected to significantly enhance the combat capability and survivability of these modern amphibious platforms.
