BREAKING NEWS
North Korea has carried out its first ballistic missile test of 2026, once again heightening security concerns in the Asia-Pacific region. According to the South Korean military, Pyongyang launched several ballistic missiles early Sunday morning at around 7:50 a.m. local time from an area near the capital, Pyongyang. The missiles reportedly traveled eastward for approximately 900 kilometers.
South Korea’s Ministry of National Defense stated that the projectiles were assessed to be ballistic missiles and that South Korea and the United States are closely analyzing their technical specifications. The ministry emphasized that allied forces remain at a full readiness posture following the launch. In response, Seoul’s National Security Council convened an emergency meeting, while the presidential office described the launch as a provocative act and a clear violation of United Nations Security Council resolutions.
Japan’s Ministry of Defense also confirmed the detection of at least two ballistic missiles. According to Japanese authorities, the missiles reached an altitude of around 50 kilometers and flew distances of approximately 900 and 950 kilometers. Japan’s Defense Minister Shinjiro Koizumi stated that North Korea’s continued development of nuclear weapons and missile systems poses an unacceptable threat to Japan and the wider international community.
This launch marked North Korea’s first ballistic missile test since November. Analysts believe the timing may be linked to recent geopolitical developments, including a U.S. military operation abroad, which may have influenced Pyongyang’s decision to demonstrate its deterrence capabilities. North Korea has long argued that its nuclear and missile programs are essential to prevent foreign-led regime change efforts.
The test also took place just hours before South Korean President Lee Jae Myung departed for Beijing to hold talks with Chinese President Xi Jinping. China remains North Korea’s most important economic and political backer, and Seoul hopes Beijing can play a constructive role in easing tensions on the Korean Peninsula.
Meanwhile, North Korean leader Kim Jong Un has ordered a major expansion of the country’s missile production capacity ahead of an upcoming ruling party congress. State media reported that Kim instructed defense industries to increase output by 250 percent, underscoring Pyongyang’s continued focus on strengthening its military capabilities.
