The Netherlands has taken a major step to enhance its air force’s operational capabilities with a new arms deal. The U.S. Department of State has approved the sale of AGM-158B/B-2 JASSM-ER (Joint Air-to-Surface Standoff Missile-Extended Range) long-range cruise missiles valued at $908 million to the Royal Netherlands Air Force. The details of the agreement were confirmed by the U.S. Defense Security Cooperation Agency (DSCA).
Under the deal, the Netherlands will receive 120 JASSM-ER missiles, along with 15 inert training missiles, maintenance and testing equipment, spare parts, consumables, personnel training, engineering and technical documentation, and logistical support. This package is designed to significantly boost the long-range strike capabilities of the F-35A Lightning II fighter jets operated by the Royal Netherlands Air Force.
In its statement, the DSCA underlined that the sale would not only modernize Dutch air power but also strengthen the strategic defense partnership between the Netherlands and the United States. Moreover, the deal is expected to contribute to European security by increasing deterrence against regional threats and reinforcing NATO’s collective defense posture.
The JASSM-ER missiles are known for their stealth, extended range, and precision strike capabilities, making them a crucial asset in modern warfare. By acquiring these advanced systems, the Netherlands is set to enhance its homeland defense while gaining a stronger deterrent posture in the face of regional security challenges. Analysts point out that this procurement will help position the Netherlands among the most advanced air forces in Europe.
