Leonardo has finalized a multi-year support contract with the Italian Air Force to sustain its fleet of C-27J Spartan tactical transport aircraft, strengthening one of Italy’s most versatile airlift capabilities. The agreement covers the period from 2026 to 2028 and includes full-spectrum logistics assistance and dedicated simulator support for the International Training Centre (ITC) in Pisa, where crews undergo advanced mission preparation.
Under the performance-based structure of the program, Leonardo will oversee technical, administrative, and maintenance services at both Pisa and Pratica di Mare air bases. This model ensures higher aircraft availability, improved cost efficiency, and uninterrupted operational readiness for Italy’s 12-aircraft C-27J fleet. The Spartan’s reputation for rugged performance is central to the agreement: equipped with two powerful turboprop engines, the aircraft can operate from unprepared runways and withstand harsh weather and environmental conditions.
One of the C-27J’s most notable strengths is its rapidly reconfigurable cabin. The platform can switch between 11 mission layouts—including cargo transport, troop movement, medical evacuation, and advanced aerial firefighting—within just 30 minutes. This flexibility has made the Spartan a cornerstone of Italy’s tactical airlift operations and a valuable tool for both military and humanitarian missions.
Leonardo’s collaboration with Italy’s defense sector extends far beyond the C-27J framework. The company co-manages the International Flight Training School with CAE, providing pilot training on the M-346 trainer jet supported by high-fidelity simulators and ground-based instruction systems. Leonardo also delivers advanced maintenance training across fixed-wing aircraft, helicopters, unmanned systems, and avionics, bolstering Italy’s sustainment and readiness capabilities.
Moreover, the company contributes to the Global Combat Air Programme (GCAP), supporting concept and assessment phases for Italy’s next-generation fighter jet. Leonardo has also signed long-term support agreements for rotary-wing platforms such as the AW139 and AW189, reinforcing its standing as a key industrial partner in both domestic and international aviation programs.
This new C-27J support contract not only enhances Italy’s operational effectiveness but also reaffirms Leonardo’s strategic role in shaping the future of European military aviation.
