BREAKING NEWS
In a significant step for defense technology, L3Harris is preparing to launch production of its Viper Shield electronic warfare package for Lockheed Martin’s F-16 Block 70/72 fighters by late 2025. Designed to revolutionize the F-16’s survivability and combat effectiveness, the system provides digital radar warning receivers and advanced threat detection capabilities.
Unlike analog systems, the Viper Shield can simultaneously detect multiple signals, allowing pilots to identify enemy radars faster and deploy effective countermeasures. L3Harris has confirmed production of 166 units for five international customers, underscoring the program’s global relevance and strategic importance.
The system is built to enhance situational awareness and deliver self-protection through electronic countermeasures, while also integrating seamlessly with Northrop Grumman’s AESA radar. This integration ensures that the F-16 not only gains defensive advantages but also improved mission capabilities.
As Lockheed Martin ramps up production of the F-16 Block 70/72, L3Harris plans to increase its monthly production capacity to eight Viper Shield systems. Although Bahrain’s recently delivered Block 70 jets are not yet equipped with the system, future integration is expected.
According to L3Harris officials, the Viper Shield’s development is not limited to the F-16. The company is also exploring its adaptation for other fighter aircraft and platforms, highlighting its broader ambitions in the field of advanced electronic warfare.
