One of the most notable elements of Russia’s military offensive in the Donbas region has been the deployment of Kalibr cruise missiles. Analysts highlight that these weapons, with their advanced capabilities, represent a strategic threat extending far beyond Ukraine. According to defense researcher Anıl Şahin, Kalibr missiles are particularly effective when launched from naval platforms against land targets, giving them the potential to alter the course of the conflict.
With an operational range of approximately 2,500 kilometers, Kalibr missiles fired from a Russian warship in the Black Sea could put numerous European capitals within striking distance. This capability provides Russia with a powerful deterrent not only in Ukraine but across the wider region.
Each missile can carry a 450-kilogram warhead and is also capable of being fitted with a nuclear payload, making it an extremely destructive weapon despite its relatively compact size. Its ability to fly at low altitudes, effectively evading many air defense systems, further increases its lethality.
Şahin stresses that the threat posed by Kalibr missiles extends well beyond Ukraine, with serious implications for European security and global stability. Russia’s possession and deployment of such weapons underline the need for new considerations in international defense and security policies.
