Hosted by Türkiye, the International Anatolian Phoenix-2026 Exercise has officially started at the 3rd Main Jet Base Command in Konya. The exercise, which will run until April 17, 2026, is structured around personnel recovery operations and aims to enhance operational coordination in complex battlefield conditions. With its multinational structure and joint-force participation, the drill stands out as one of the key training activities in the field of combat search and rescue and personnel recovery.
The main purpose of the exercise is to test and improve command-and-control procedures while training Personnel Recovery Task Force elements under realistic wartime scenarios. In addition to the Turkish Armed Forces’ Land, Naval, and Air Force Commands, the General Staff Special Forces Command and the Gendarmerie General Command are also taking part. This broad domestic participation highlights the importance of inter-service coordination in missions that require rapid response, precise planning, and integrated execution.
Anatolian Phoenix-2026 also carries a strong international dimension. Alongside Türkiye, the United States, Azerbaijan, Poland, and Slovakia are participating actively in the exercise. Observer countries include Germany, Belarus, Georgia, Croatia, Kyrgyzstan, Latvia, North Macedonia, Malaysia, Nigeria, Pakistan, Oman, and Jordan. This multinational structure increases the exercise’s value not only as a training event, but also as a platform for improving interoperability, operational understanding, and cooperation among friendly and allied nations.
The Anatolian Phoenix series is designed specifically to strengthen personnel recovery capabilities by testing command structures, improving coordination between different force elements, and conducting training under realistic operational conditions. Likely exercise scenarios include the rescue of isolated personnel behind enemy lines, integrated operations involving air, land, and possibly maritime assets, as well as emergency extraction missions. In this regard, the exercise offers participants an opportunity to rehearse highly demanding missions in a controlled but realistic environment.
By hosting the exercise at Konya’s 3rd Main Jet Base Command, Türkiye is also making use of one of its most capable training infrastructures for multinational air operations. Beyond its tactical value, Anatolian Phoenix-2026 reinforces Türkiye’s role as an important partner in regional and allied personnel recovery training. As the exercise continues, it is expected to further strengthen both Türkiye’s own operational capabilities and the level of coordination it can achieve with partner nations in future joint missions.
