BREAKING NEWS
Hungary continues to strengthen its defense capabilities through its ongoing modernization efforts, most recently by enhancing the Hungarian Air Force with deliveries of Airbus H225M helicopters. The handover ceremony at the Szolnok air base marked a significant step in Hungary’s transition away from its Soviet-era equipment toward NATO-standard platforms.
Hungary had previously leased JAS 39C Gripen fighter jets from Sweden in 2001, demonstrating its commitment to modernization. Under the “Zrinyi 2026” modernization program, Hungary signed an agreement with Airbus in 2018 to acquire 16 H225M helicopters. To date, six of these aircraft have been delivered, signaling steady progress in the program.
Szolnok air base serves as Hungary’s central hub for helicopter operations, housing transport and attack battalions as well as training units. The newly delivered H225Ms will play a key role in special operations support, troop and cargo transport, and aerial resupply missions.
The H225M offers significant upgrades over Hungary’s legacy Mi-17 helicopters, with the ability to carry up to 28 soldiers. Equipped with the advanced H-Force weapon system, the helicopters are designed to conduct intelligence, surveillance, escort, and reconnaissance missions with high efficiency. This modernization marks a strategic leap in Hungary’s ability to meet the demands of modern warfare and to operate effectively alongside NATO allies.
