BREAKING NEWS
Turkey has taken a significant step in indigenous strike capability with the first deliveries of the HGK-84 guided weapon kits, developed jointly by ASFAT and TÜBİTAK SAGE. The kits convert legacy Mk-84 general-purpose bombs into GPS-guided precision munitions, providing metre-level accuracy and enabling more effective, lower-collateral strikes. This domestic solution reduces reliance on foreign JDAM systems and represents a maturation of Turkey’s precision-guidance ecosystem.
The HGK-84 is tailored for the 2,000-pound class Mk-84 bomb, transforming it from a free-fall munition into a networked guided weapon that navigates to its target using satellite guidance. Defense analysts highlight that this capability broadens the mission set available to Turkish strike aviation and larger unmanned platforms by enabling deep, precise strikes against hardened or time-sensitive targets. The increase in accuracy also supports mission planning that minimizes unintended damage to nearby infrastructure and civilians.
Oprationally, initial platforms able to employ HGK-84 include F-16s, F-4E fighters, and the AKINCI attack UAV — the latter’s high payload and endurance notably enabling long-duration, heavy-weapon sorties. Future integration plans point toward national platforms such as KAAN, KIZILELMA, and ANKA-3, which would further expand deployment flexibility. Turkey’s broader ordnance portfolio — from MAM family munitions to LGK, KGK and TEBER series — now includes a heavy, precision-guided layer thanks to HGK-84, allowing force planners to match weapons to mission profiles more effectively.
Beyond tactical effects, HGK-84’s entry into service has strategic and export implications. Turkey’s success in fielding mature, locally developed guidance kits increases autonomy in force modernization and presents a potential export offering to partner nations already operating compatible platforms. As HGK-84 moves from acceptance into full operational status, it is likely to become a central element of Turkey’s precision-strike architecture.
