BREAKING NEWS
Türkiye’s rapid rise in defense technology is driving innovation far beyond the battlefield. The country’s achievements in aerospace, naval, and missile systems are now spilling over into other strategic sectors such as energy, exploration, and engineering, creating a powerful synergy between defense capability and national development. The IDEF 2025 International Defense Industry Fair showcased not only cutting-edge military systems but also dual-use technologies shaping Türkiye’s broader industrial future.
Prof. Dr. Gürkan Kumbaroğlu, Vice Rector of Boğaziçi University, emphasized that IDEF should not be viewed solely as a defense fair. “IDEF is a platform where technologies influencing energy, maritime operations, and industrial infrastructure also emerge,” he said. He highlighted the Kaşif unmanned underwater vehicle (UUV) developed by Armelsan as a prime example of this crossover between defense and civil technology.
Originally designed for deep-sea operations in the Black Sea, Kaşif now supports Türkiye’s offshore drilling missions and will soon operate in international projects in Libya, Pakistan, and Somalia. Its latest model can dive up to 4,500 meters, enhancing Türkiye’s ability to independently conduct deep-sea energy exploration. “The technological know-how gained from defense production has directly strengthened our energy capabilities,” Prof. Kumbaroğlu explained. “Kaşif shows how defense engineering is fueling progress in civil and industrial sectors.”
He also noted that defense strength and energy independence are inseparable: “Without a strong defense industry, energy resources alone have limited value. Türkiye has achieved both — a military and technological foundation that supports its energy sovereignty.” He pointed out that most of Türkiye’s recent energy agreements are accompanied by parallel defense cooperation deals, reflecting the interdependence of the two domains.
IDEF 2025 thus serves as more than a showcase of military systems; it reflects a technological ecosystem where defense innovation drives growth across sectors such as energy, maritime exploration, communications, and nuclear technology. Türkiye’s ability to apply its defense expertise to civilian industries positions it as a game-changing power in global technology and strategic resilience.
