BREAKING NEWS
France has taken a notable step in defense technology with the unveiling of the hydrogen-powered Rapace Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (UAV) at the Defense Innovation Forum. Developed by the Air School Research Center (CREA), the Rapace project explores the advantages of hydrogen technology in UAV systems, focusing on energy efficiency and sustainability in military applications. In May 2023, Rapace successfully carried out its maiden flight in Pourrières, marking the world’s first flight of a closed-cathode, liquid-cooled PAC H2 UAV.
Launched in 2021 by the French Air and Space Force, the project was carried out in cooperation with the local company Atechsys. Its primary objective is to overcome the scientific and technical challenges of hydrogen fuel through collaborative research. By using hydrogen as a clean energy source, Rapace not only reduces carbon emissions but also promises longer endurance and greater operational sustainability compared to conventional UAVs.
The UAV’s external design has drawn comparisons to Türkiye’s Bayraktar TB2, sparking discussions in defense and aerospace circles. However, Rapace’s specific performance parameters—such as range, payload capacity, and operational versatility—have not yet been fully disclosed. Experts note that this innovation strengthens France’s standing in the high-tech defense market and could open new opportunities within the European defense ecosystem.
This development also reflects France’s broader ambition to combine defense innovation with renewable energy solutions. Should Rapace reach operational deployment, it could pave the way for a new era of hydrogen-powered UAVs on a global scale.
