BREAKING NEWS
France has taken a significant step to enhance Armenia’s military capabilities by delivering a batch of Bastion armored vehicles manufactured by the French company Acmat. The shipment, consisting of 22 vehicles, was transported via Georgia’s Poti port and then by rail to Armenia. This delivery reflects the growing military cooperation between the two countries. French Foreign Minister Catherine Colonna had earlier confirmed during her visit that Paris and Yerevan had reached an agreement on military support, underlining the seriousness of the partnership.
The inclusion of Bastion armored vehicles in Armenia’s arsenal is expected to not only strengthen its military capabilities but also influence the fragile security dynamics of the South Caucasus. Reports suggest that the cooperation may extend beyond armored vehicles, with France potentially supporting Armenia in strengthening its air defense systems. Such developments could reshape the regional military balance and introduce new dynamics into ongoing geopolitical tensions.
Azerbaijan reacted strongly to France’s move. The Azerbaijani Ministry of Foreign Affairs condemned the military support to Armenia, warning that such actions could increase the risk of renewed conflict in the region. Baku emphasized that the military buildup in Armenia poses a threat to regional peace and stability.
Meanwhile, Armenia’s deepening military ties with France may overshadow its existing defense cooperation with India. In recent years, Armenia has procured multiple rocket launch systems (Pinaka MLRS) and anti-tank systems from India. However, this new agreement with France signals a possible strategic shift in Armenia’s defense policy and highlights its efforts to diversify and modernize its military partnerships.
