BREAKING NEWS
One of Türkiye’s most prominent indigenous aviation programs, the GÖKBEY helicopter, is now preparing to take on a new mission in the field of healthcare. Haluk Görgün, head of the Presidency of Defence Industries, announced that the first three GÖKBEY helicopters configured for air ambulance missions will be delivered to the Ministry of Health by the end of 2026. Speaking during the “GÖKBEY Air Ambulance Launch, Production and Flight Test Observation Program” held at TUSAŞ facilities in Kahramankazan, Ankara, Görgün stated that the delivery timeline covers the next six to eight months.
The air ambulance version of GÖKBEY is seen as an important milestone in transferring Türkiye’s defense industry capabilities into civilian public services. Görgün emphasized that the helicopter was developed entirely through indigenous engineering and production infrastructure, and that the platform was specifically designed to match Türkiye’s geographical and climatic conditions. He also noted that the Ministry of Health had shown a strong commitment to meeting its ambulance helicopter requirements through a domestically developed platform, underlining the strategic importance of interagency cooperation.
From a technical standpoint, GÖKBEY stands out as a 6-ton-class general-purpose helicopter. According to the details shared by Görgün, the platform has a fuel capacity of approximately 1 ton, can remain airborne for 3.8 hours, and offers a range of around 700 kilometers. A total of 80 helicopters are planned for production, with the air ambulance version becoming an important part of the wider GÖKBEY family. These characteristics could provide a meaningful advantage for emergency medical response, especially in remote or hard-to-reach areas where rapid evacuation and critical patient transport are essential.
Another noteworthy aspect of the program is the progress made in certification and testing. Görgün stated that an important phase of the helicopter’s certification process has already been completed, while additional tests tailored specifically to ambulance missions will continue. A test flight of the GÖKBEY air ambulance was also conducted following the program event, offering a visible sign that the platform is moving closer to operational use in the healthcare sector. This positions GÖKBEY not only as a solution for security forces, but also as a high-value national air platform capable of supporting Türkiye’s civil health infrastructure.
The upcoming delivery of the GÖKBEY air ambulance helicopters also carries symbolic significance for Türkiye’s aviation and defense industries. The introduction of a locally produced helicopter into frontline medical evacuation and emergency health services represents an important step in reducing foreign dependence while expanding the role of national platforms in critical public missions. Once the first deliveries are completed by the end of the year, GÖKBEY’s real-world operational performance in the healthcare field will begin to draw even closer attention.
