BREAKING NEWS
Estonia has taken a significant step to enhance its defense capabilities through a major agreement with Poland. The Estonian Centre for Defence Investment (ECDI) has finalized a contract worth €103 million (approximately $113 million) for the delivery of Polish-made Piorun short-range man-portable air defense systems (MANPADS). These systems are expected to substantially strengthen the air defense capacity of the Estonian Defence Forces.
Under the deal, Polish manufacturer Mesko will provide Estonia with 300 Piorun missiles and 100 launchers. With a range of up to eight kilometers, the Piorun system can effectively counter threats from fixed-wing aircraft, helicopters, and drones. Having proven its effectiveness in the war in Ukraine, the Piorun has gained a reputation for reliability and battlefield performance.
This contract represents the first major defense procurement deal between Estonia and Poland, marking a deepening of military cooperation between the two nations. The Estonian Defence Forces plan to operate the Piorun systems as a separate unit in wartime. According to Tanel Lelov, head of Estonia’s Air and Missile Defence Department, the Piorun will provide additional protection to maneuver units while also reinforcing air defense at strategic sites away from the frontlines.
The Estonian government financed this acquisition through its military defense enhancement package. At the same time, Estonia continues to play an active role in supporting Ukraine. In 2023, the country increased its defense spending for Kyiv to €500 million and pledged to allocate 0.25% of its GDP over the next four years for military aid to Ukraine. This demonstrates Estonia’s commitment not only to strengthening its own defenses but also to contributing to regional security.
