A significant step has been taken in Türkiye’s defense industry with the integration of mortar systems into drones. Professor Dr. Sinan Kıvrak and his students at Ostim Technical University have developed an innovative Drone-Integrated Mortar Release System, which has now passed both laboratory and field tests. By combining the traditional mortar—a key fire-support weapon of ground forces—with modern drone technology, the system adapts to the evolving dynamics of contemporary battlefields.
The system’s release mechanism enables drones to carry and drop 60 mm and 81 mm mortar rounds onto designated targets with high accuracy. Initial trials, conducted with inert (non-explosive) test rounds, were completed successfully, demonstrating the system’s functionality. Remotely controlled, the drone can be directed from observation points to target coordinates, allowing ground units to benefit from aerial fire support in real time.
Developed in collaboration with the domestic drone manufacturer Arı Savunma, the platform features a payload capacity of 25 kilograms, an endurance of approximately 30 minutes, and compatibility with various payloads. Professor Kıvrak emphasized the system’s low-cost and sustainable design, highlighting its potential to provide effective solutions against enemy elements in strategically critical areas, such as around military outposts.
This breakthrough not only strengthens the operational flexibility of the Turkish Armed Forces but also contributes to Türkiye’s growing defense exports. By integrating UAV technology with traditional firepower, the system could support allied and partner nations as well, marking an important milestone in Türkiye’s efforts to advance unmanned combat solutions.
