BREAKING NEWS
Developed by Turkish Aerospace Industries (TAI), the National Combat Aircraft KAAN is approaching a significant milestone in the Middle East market. Speaking at the World Defense Show held in Riyadh, TAI CEO Mehmet Demiroğlu emphasized that negotiations with Saudi Arabia regarding KAAN have now been elevated to the “highest level.” He underlined that discussions have been ongoing for quite some time and that an official and positive announcement could be made within 2026, possibly even sooner.
Demiroğlu highlighted that KAAN is not merely a fighter aircraft but a multi-layered and comprehensive ecosystem project for Türkiye. The process is being carried out under the coordination of the Presidency of Defence Industries and requires intergovernmental agreements, long-term planning, and structured programs. He also noted that the project enjoys strong and continuous support at the presidential level, which significantly reinforces its international prospects.
Regarding potential cooperation models, Demiroğlu stated that all options remain on the table. These range from direct procurement to full-scale industrial partnership and joint production. The final model will depend on Saudi Arabia’s requirements, infrastructure capabilities, and the number of aircraft to be acquired. According to Demiroğlu, figures such as 20, 50, or even 100 aircraft are being discussed, while smaller quantities would not be feasible for advanced production or final assembly line investments.
The scope of cooperation is not limited to KAAN alone. TAI’s GÖKBEY General Purpose Helicopter is also attracting interest from Saudi Arabia for both military and civilian uses, including offshore operations. Demiroğlu indicated that KAAN and GÖKBEY could progress together under a model aligned with Saudi Arabia’s Vision 2030, potentially including local production capabilities.
Additionally, Demiroğlu announced that TAI plans to establish an office in Saudi Arabia in the near term. This office is expected to grow into a regional hub influencing neighboring countries and strengthening Türkiye’s long-term defense industry presence in the region. He expressed strong optimism about bilateral relations and confidence that both sides will benefit from this strategic cooperation.
