BREAKING NEWS
Canada’s defense industry is entering a critical modernization phase with the Canadian Multi-Mission Aircraft (CMMA) program. Two of the nation’s leading companies, Bombardier and General Dynamics Mission Systems-Canada, have teamed up to provide the Royal Canadian Air Force (RCAF) with a next-generation solution to replace its aging CP-140M Aurora fleet.
The new aircraft, based on the Bombardier Global 6500 platform, is being designed to perform anti-submarine warfare (ASW), intelligence, surveillance, and reconnaissance (ISR) missions, as well as other critical operations. Combining Bombardier’s expertise in advanced aviation platforms with General Dynamics’ specialization in mission systems, the project promises a cost-effective, long-range, and technologically advanced solution tailored to Canada’s defense requirements.
According to Bombardier Defence Vice President Jean-Christophe Gallagher and General Dynamics Mission Systems-Canada President Joel Houde, the partnership will deliver innovative and reliable capabilities that meet the evolving needs of the Canadian Armed Forces. In addition to ASW and ISR roles, the aircraft will also support Command, Control, Communications, Intelligence, Surveillance, and Reconnaissance (C3ISR) missions, further expanding Canada’s operational flexibility.
Financially, the project is expected to exceed $1.5 billion in total cost. The aircraft selection is planned for 2025, with deliveries scheduled between 2026 and 2036. Beyond strengthening Canada’s national defense, the program is also seen as a strategic opportunity to boost the country’s domestic defense industry capacity and enhance its competitiveness on the international stage.
