BREAKING NEWS
Belgium is preparing for a significant shift in its military aviation structure by replacing the NH90 NATO Frigate Helicopter (NFH) in the search-and-rescue (SAR) role. Belgian Minister of Defence Theo Francken announced on 8 December that the procurement of four new SAR helicopters has been approved. This acquisition is part of a broader EUR 232 million investment aimed at modernizing Koksijde Air Base, the primary operating base for the NH90 NFH fleet.
The Belgian Air Force currently operates eight NH90 helicopters, consisting of four maritime NFH variants and four land-based Troop Transport Helicopter (TTH) versions. Earlier in 2025, Belgium retired its TTH helicopters due to poor availability rates and high maintenance demands. At that time, authorities stated that the NFH fleet would continue performing SAR missions alongside frigate-based anti-submarine warfare (ASW) operations.
However, recent developments indicate a change in this approach. Belgian national media has reported that the NH90 NFH will be withdrawn from the SAR role entirely. The responsibility will be transferred to a new helicopter type, which has not yet been officially selected, with entry into service planned for 2026.
On 24 December, the Belgian Defence Press Service confirmed that the Council of Ministers had formally approved the purchase of four new SAR helicopters. According to the official statement, these aircraft will replace the historic Sea King helicopters and significantly strengthen Belgium’s capabilities in rescue operations, medical evacuation, urgent organ transport, and emergency assistance. This move reflects Belgium’s broader objective of improving operational readiness while ensuring reliable and rapid response to both military and civilian emergencies.
