BREAKING NEWS
The Turkish defense industry continues to strengthen its presence in the global arms market with another significant export success. The Government of Bangladesh has officially approved a $600 million defense agreement with Türkiye for the procurement of six T-129 ATAK attack helicopters. The deal, concluded under a government-to-government framework, highlights the growing strategic defense cooperation between the two countries.
This procurement forms a key component of Bangladesh’s long-term military modernization roadmap known as “Forces Goal 2030.” Speaking on the agreement, Bangladesh Armed Forces Principal Staff Officer Lieutenant General S.M. Kamrul Hassan emphasized that the T-129 ATAK helicopters will substantially enhance the country’s offensive and deterrence capabilities, particularly in border security and rapid response operations.
Developed and manufactured by Turkish Aerospace Industries, the T-129 ATAK is designed for high-performance operations in challenging terrain and adverse weather conditions. Equipped with advanced avionics, targeting systems, and a wide range of integrated weapons, the platform offers superior maneuverability and firepower. Officials from the Bangladesh Air Force noted that the helicopters will act as a major force multiplier against potential threats along both land and maritime borders.
Rising regional security concerns have played a significant role in this decision. The Myanmar border, increasing military activity in the Bay of Bengal, and the protection of critical maritime energy routes are expected to be among the primary operational areas for the T-129 ATAK fleet. The helicopters are anticipated to perform missions including reconnaissance, close air support, rapid intervention, and counter-asymmetric warfare operations.
Bangladesh’s choice to procure Turkish-made helicopters over Western or Russian alternatives underscores Türkiye’s growing credibility and competitiveness in the international defense market. By offering NATO-standard systems with cost efficiency, operational flexibility, and political reliability, Türkiye continues to position itself as a preferred defense partner.
Beyond the platform acquisition itself, the agreement is also expected to include provisions for technology transfer, the establishment of local maintenance and overhaul infrastructure, and long-term logistical support. In this respect, the deal represents not only a military procurement but also a strategic partnership aimed at sustainable defense cooperation between Bangladesh and Türkiye.
