The Austrian Ministry of Defense has taken a significant step to enhance its air defense capabilities by signing a landmark €500 million deal with German defense giant Rheinmetall. The signing ceremony, held in Vienna, was attended by Defense Minister Klaudia Tanner. The program is considered a cornerstone of Austria’s broader “Mission Forward” modernization initiative, aimed at upgrading the country’s armed forces.
Rheinmetall’s modernization program will begin in February 2024 and is expected to last 48 months. Under the agreement, the Austrian Armed Forces will receive seven tactical air defense units. Each unit will include four 35mm cannons, advanced airspace surveillance sensors, and a command center. Additionally, existing 35mm cannons will be upgraded with the latest technology. The deal also covers spare parts, operator training, and the supply of 35mm ammunition.
Rheinmetall CEO Armin Papperger emphasized that this project will position Austria as a leader in air and drone defense within Europe, while also reinforcing Rheinmetall’s strategic role in strengthening European defense capabilities. Meanwhile, Rheinmetall Air Defense CEO Oliver Dürr stated that the decision represents a major leap forward for Austria and will significantly contribute to capacity utilization at the company’s Zurich facility.
This agreement marks a strategic milestone for Austria, substantially enhancing its air defense capabilities. Once completed, the modernization will enable the Austrian Armed Forces to provide more effective protection against both traditional aerial threats and modern unmanned systems.
