BREAKING NEWS
Türkiye’s military shipbuilding and naval export capability is entering a new phase with a dual delivery to be carried out by ASFAT. The Contraamiral Roman corvette, built by Istanbul Naval Shipyard Command under the main contractorship of Military Factory and Shipyard Management Inc., will be delivered to the Romanian Naval Forces, while the TCG Koçhisar offshore patrol vessel will be delivered to the Turkish Naval Forces.
The delivery ceremony is expected to be held with the participation of President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan and Romanian President Nicuşor Dan. The deliveries carry strategic importance in terms of both strengthening the Turkish Navy with modern indigenous platforms and demonstrating Türkiye’s ability to export military vessels to allied countries.
According to ASFAT, these deliveries aim to contribute to the deterrent power of the Turkish Naval Forces at sea and move defense industry cooperation between Türkiye and Romania to a new stage. In this respect, the project is not merely about the delivery of two ships; it is also an important achievement showing Türkiye’s capabilities in military ship design, construction, integration and export.
The Contraamiral Roman corvette, which will enter the inventory of the Romanian Naval Forces, is designed to be used in reconnaissance, surveillance, patrol, maritime security and combat missions with modern mission systems. The ship is expected to make an important contribution to Romania’s naval security activities, especially in the Black Sea. At a time when security balances in the Black Sea are becoming increasingly critical, Romania’s acquisition of a modern corvette stands out as a notable development for NATO’s regional deterrence.
The delivery of the Contraamiral Roman corvette also carries special significance as it demonstrates Türkiye’s ability to export a warship to a NATO and European Union member country. ASFAT’s export to Romania shows that the Turkish defense industry can produce warships in line with international standards and offer solutions for the needs of allied navies. This success is also considered an important gain in strengthening a trust-based, sustainable and high-technology cooperation model with friendly and allied countries.
TCG Koçhisar, which will be delivered to the Turkish Naval Forces, was built as part of the Hisar-class offshore patrol vessel program. With hull number P-1221, the ship will be used in a wide range of missions, including protection of maritime jurisdiction areas, reconnaissance and surveillance, maritime security operations, patrol missions and humanitarian assistance activities. With the entry of TCG Koçhisar into service, the Turkish Naval Forces’ ability to maintain a continuous presence in open seas, ensure maritime security and respond rapidly to crisis areas is expected to be strengthened.
Hisar-class offshore patrol vessels are among the new-generation platforms that will increase Türkiye’s effectiveness in the Blue Homeland. These vessels offer a flexible structure that can perform not only traditional patrol duties, but also reconnaissance, surveillance, escort, maritime security, search and rescue, and humanitarian assistance operations when needed. The addition of TCG Koçhisar to the inventory will contribute to the Turkish Navy’s ability to operate with more indigenous platforms across different mission areas.
ASFAT’s delivery to both the Turkish Naval Forces and the Romanian Naval Forces in the same period also demonstrates the production tempo and project management capability of Turkish military shipbuilding. The construction capability of Istanbul Naval Shipyard Command, combined with ASFAT’s main contractor model, creates a structure capable of responding simultaneously to domestic requirements and export projects. This dual delivery shows that Türkiye has moved beyond being a regional naval producer and has become a reliable solution partner capable of offering high-technology platforms to NATO allies.
