BREAKING NEWS
ASFAT, the Military Factory and Shipyard Operating Company under the Ministry of National Defence, is preparing to deliver two vessels to naval forces. The Contraamiral Roman corvette will be handed over to Romania's Navy Command, while the TCG Koçhisar open-sea patrol vessel will be delivered to the Turkish Navy Command. Both ceremonies will be attended by President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan and Romanian President Nicuşor Dan, marking a significant milestone in Turkish naval industry capabilities.
ASFAT has played a crucial role in Turkey's defense industry and shipbuilding sector since the 1950s, operating under the Ministry of National Defence. Through the Istanbul Shipyard Command, the company has designed and constructed various classes of naval platforms, including corvettes, frigates, submarines, and support vessels. The delivery of a combat vessel to Romania demonstrates ASFAT's competence in supplying warships to NATO and European Union member states, establishing Turkey as a credible naval shipbuilder in the Western alliance.
The Contraamiral Roman corvette has been designed to meet modern naval warfare doctrine and regional security requirements. The vessel is equipped with integrated sensor and weapon systems capable of performing reconnaissance, surveillance, patrol, maritime security, and combat operations. The TCG Koçhisar, as a member of the Hisar-class open-sea patrol vessel family, is designed for a broad range of missions including protection of maritime zones, reconnaissance and surveillance, maritime security operations, patrol duties, and humanitarian assistance. Both vessels are equipped with modern charting, communications, and navigation systems.
Turkish naval industry has successfully completed major platform development projects over the past two decades, including the MİLGEM, İSTİF, and ADA-class vessels. The export of the Contraamiral Roman corvette to Romania represents international recognition of these achievements and deepens Turkey's defense industry cooperation with NATO allies. Romania, facing increasing security concerns in the Black Sea, is modernizing its naval forces and has demonstrated confidence in Turkish shipbuilding technology through this procurement decision.
In the global naval shipbuilding market, countries such as South Korea, Singapore, and Australia lead in corvette and patrol vessel exports. Turkey is establishing a competitive position in this market through ASFAT and private sector shipyards. The delivery to Romania demonstrates that Turkish shipbuilding demonstrates design, engineering, and production capabilities meeting Western standards. This success may establish the foundation for similar cooperation agreements with other NATO and EU member states in the future.
