BREAKING NEWS
Artificial intelligence technologies developed within the Turkish defense industry are now set to provide significant benefits in the field of healthcare. HAVELSAN and Gazi University Hospital have signed a strategic cooperation agreement to launch the “AI-Based Detection of Pathological Findings Project,” which aims to accelerate and enhance the accuracy of cancer diagnosis through locally developed artificial intelligence solutions.
The project was officially initiated with the signatures of Serkan Gümrükçüoğlu, HAVELSAN’s Director of ICT R&D and Engineering, and Prof. Dr. Hakan Atalar, Chief Physician of Gazi University Hospital. The AI-powered decision support software to be developed under the project will help detect several cancer types, primarily prostate, breast, colon, and bladder cancers. Gazi University’s extensive pathology archive will play a vital role in training and validating the system.
Within the project framework, pathology slides prepared in laboratories will be digitized before being reviewed by pathologists. These digital images will be processed using HAVELSAN’s advanced AI-supported image analysis software. Automated tumor detection, classification, and size measurement will be performed, after which patients will be prioritized based on disease severity. This will not only speed up diagnosis but also allow specialists to focus their time on critical cases more effectively.
HAVELSAN’s strong capabilities in data storage, image processing, and big data analytics—developed through major defense and security projects—will be central to the system. The project will be implemented with high reliability, strong data privacy measures, adherence to national cybersecurity standards, and the advantages of fully local and national technology. HAVELSAN has previously developed mission-focused AI models for major projects such as AFIS, KGYS, and IGT-TUYGUN, gaining international recognition for performance and optimization techniques.
According to the Ministry of Health, prostate, breast, and colon cancers are among the most common types in Türkiye. For this reason, the initial phase of the project will specifically focus on these areas. After validation tests conducted with Gazi University, clinical trials are expected to begin at other leading institutions across the country. Once scientifically verified, the system is planned to be deployed widely in hospitals throughout Türkiye.
Beyond supporting national healthcare services, the project aims to establish an innovative and globally competitive model in AI-based diagnostic technologies. With this initiative, HAVELSAN will extend its deep expertise from defense and security into human health, reinforcing Türkiye’s technological capabilities in both sectors.
