BREAKING NEWS
The Turkish Coast Guard will receive comprehensive system procurements in 2027 according to the Presidential Annual Program. The plan includes one Unmanned Maritime Vehicle (UMV), two Vertical Take-Off and Landing Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (VTOL), modernization of two AB 412-EP helicopters, and establishment of one Diving, Safety, Security, Search and Rescue (DSSR) team. The Ministry of Interior, Ministry of National Defence, and Defense Industry Agency are designated as responsible organizations for the projects.
The Turkish Coast Guard's objective to enhance maritime and surveillance capabilities is being translated into concrete actions through these procurements. Unmanned maritime vehicles perform reconnaissance, surveillance, and data collection tasks in operations where ship platforms have limited availability. VTOL systems play a critical role in search and rescue and surveillance operations in coastal regions due to their ability to conduct rapid vertical takeoff and landing in confined areas. The modernization of AB 412-EP helicopters under ASELSAN coordination will include radar, electronic mapping, image transmission systems, electro-optical sensors, communications equipment, AIS installation, and national IFF components.
The Turkish Coast Guard's strategic direction reflects an important positioning within the Turkish defense industry ecosystem. The utilization of domestic and national systems in maritime operations contributes to technological independence while increasing localization rates in the sector. Particularly, modernization efforts conducted by ASELSAN ensure that existing platform inventory is equipped with updated sensor and communications systems. This approach supports optimization of current resources as much as new platform procurement.
The Turkish Coast Guard is known to seek procurement of the GÖKBEY helicopter developed by TUSAŞ. According to the Coast Guard's 2024 Activities and 2025 Objectives report, three GÖKBEY helicopters were planned for procurement with two helicopters targeted for delivery in July 2026 and one in September 2026. This platform will replace AB 412 helicopters and will be equipped with more advanced avionics systems. The platform diversity required by the Coast Guard for reconnaissance, surveillance, search and rescue, and transport missions enhances operational flexibility and resilience.
Unmanned systems and modernized helicopters have become standard in global maritime security operations. NATO countries and regional powers routinely employ UAVs, UMVs, and advanced sensor systems in coast guard operations. The Turkish Coast Guard's procurement plan demonstrates a modernization strategy aligned with international standards. The commencement of production for the National Coast Guard Vessel also indicates strengthening of maritime infrastructure with domestic design and production capacity. Thus, the Coast Guard is entering a comprehensive operational transformation process alongside its objective to modernize all helicopters by 2030.
