BREAKING NEWS
Within the scope of Turkey’s national warship program MİLGEM, the I-Class frigate TCG İçel (F-518) was launched at a ceremony held at the Sefine Shipyard in Yalova. As the 8th ship under the 6th–12th MİLGEM I-Class Frigate procurement package, TCG İçel marks a significant step forward in strengthening the Turkish Naval Forces’ modern surface fleet. In his statement, President of the Defence Industry Agency (SSB) Haluk Görgün highlighted that the vessel integrates many domestically developed subsystems—including radar, sonar, fire control, and anti-ship missile systems—with an impressive localization rate of 80%.
Görgün emphasized that MİLGEM is not merely a shipbuilding program but a symbol of Turkey’s determination for self-reliance and engineering excellence in the defense sector. Supported by more than 200 organizations, companies, and institutions, the project demonstrates the maturity of Turkey’s collaborative defense ecosystem—from design and production to integration and testing. The launch of TCG İçel further enhances the “Blue Homeland” vision by increasing maritime deterrence while fostering indigenous technological advancement.
Turkey has become one of the world’s leading nations capable of constructing multiple military vessels simultaneously—from patrol boats to aircraft carriers—and exporting them to allied countries. The launch of TCG İçel follows the recent TEKNOFEST Blue Homeland event, reinforcing the momentum of Turkey’s naval modernization. Once commissioned, the frigate will provide enhanced target detection, tracking, and engagement capabilities through advanced radar and sonar systems, fire control integration, and network-centric warfare readiness.
Described by Görgün as “a symbol of Turkey’s self-confidence at sea,” TCG İçel will strengthen national defense and industry alike. Equipped with indigenous electronic warfare and missile systems, the frigate will serve as both a technological milestone and a deterrent asset, ensuring that Turkey’s naval forces maintain a strong presence across regional waters. After its launch, outfitting and testing phases will continue until the ship reaches full operational readiness.
