The Presidency of Defense Industries (SSB) has taken a significant step to strengthen the armored capabilities of the Turkish Armed Forces. According to statements shared by SSB President Prof. Dr. İsmail Demir on social media, a special armor package has been developed at ROKETSAN’s Ballistic Protection Center for Leopard 2A4 main battle tanks currently in the inventory of the Turkish Land Forces. This upgrade aims to boost the tanks’ resilience against today’s complex and asymmetric battlefield threats.
The newly designed armor package has been engineered to maximize the survivability of Leopard 2A4 tanks. Qualification tests and integration processes have already been completed successfully, and in the first phase, 40 Leopard 2A4 tanks will be equipped with the upgraded armor. This modernization effort will significantly increase the tanks’ effectiveness and protection in high-intensity combat environments.
Beyond enhancing battlefield performance, this project also underscores Turkey’s commitment to domestic defense production and technological independence. Developed entirely by ROKETSAN, the armor package highlights the growing capabilities of the Turkish defense industry in indigenous engineering and advanced R&D.
Experts emphasize that this upgrade not only strengthens the operational power of the Turkish Armed Forces but also contributes to Turkey’s regional and global defense posture. Moreover, the Leopard 2A4 armor package is expected to serve as a pioneering project for future modernization programs, further enhancing Turkey’s ability to sustain and expand its defense capabilities.
