BREAKING NEWS
One of the most prominent land-based artillery systems developed by the Turkish defense industry in recent years, the 105 mm lightweight towed BORAN Howitzer continues to attract international attention with its operational success and growing export portfolio. Designed and manufactured entirely with national resources by engineers of Makine ve Kimya Endüstrisi AŞ, BORAN stands out as a modern and highly mobile artillery solution tailored for today’s battlefield requirements.
The system was developed in line with the operational needs of the Turkish Armed Forces and officially entered service in 2021. Shortly after its induction, BORAN proved its effectiveness in the field, particularly with its rapid deployment capability, high rate of fire, and precision. Actively used by commando brigades and in air-supported operations, the howitzer provides a flexible and responsive fire support option compared to conventional artillery systems.
BORAN’s success has not been limited to domestic use. In 2024, its export to Bangladesh marked a historic milestone as the first overseas howitzer export in the history of the Republic of Türkiye. This achievement highlighted the advanced engineering level reached by the Turkish defense industry in artillery systems. Following this milestone, BORAN participated in international live-fire demonstrations held in Malaysia in May 2025, where it was evaluated alongside competing howitzers from various countries.
During these demonstrations, BORAN delivered an impressive performance by firing 12 rounds in just 46 seconds, outperforming its competitors in terms of rate of fire, system integrity, and overall reliability. This outstanding result significantly increased international interest and confidence in the system. Later in 2025, BORAN expanded its footprint in Europe with its first delivery to North Macedonia, where it received high marks during field evaluations.
Weighing approximately 1,775 kilograms, BORAN is among the lightest howitzers in its class worldwide. It can be transported by Sikorsky S-70 and CH-47 Chinook helicopters, as well as by heavy-duty land vehicles, enabling rapid deployment across diverse terrains. The system can be ready to fire in under one minute and is capable of firing while on wheels—features that set it apart from many of its counterparts.
Equipped with a GPS-supported Fire Control System, panoramic sight, and rapid positioning capability, BORAN offers superior situational awareness and operational flexibility. With its successful service record, landmark exports, and exceptional performance in international trials, the BORAN Howitzer stands as a clear indicator of Türkiye’s growing defense engineering expertise and strengthening position in the global defense market.
