BREAKING NEWS
Türkiye has taken another significant step in its defense industry’s localization and nationalization efforts. According to the Ministry of National Defense, the AKYA Heavyweight Torpedo, developed entirely with indigenous resources, has entered serial production. Manufactured by ROKETSAN, this advanced weapon system has now been officially delivered to the Turkish Naval Forces Command’s submarine fleet.
AKYA stands out with its powerful strike and high destruction capability. Its addition to the Turkish Navy’s arsenal is expected to significantly boost submarine warfare capabilities. On December 27, 2023, during a test in the Eastern Mediterranean, the torpedo was launched from TCG PREVEZE submarine and successfully hit its target with pinpoint accuracy, proving its operational effectiveness.
The transition to serial production ensures that AKYA will enhance Türkiye's submarine fleet not only with superior technical features but also with greater strategic independence. By reducing foreign dependency in defense technologies, this achievement underscores Türkiye's growing self-sufficiency in advanced military systems and strengthens its position in regional power dynamics.
With AKYA entering service, Türkiye’s role in ensuring maritime security, particularly in the Eastern Mediterranean, is expected to expand. As production continues, Turkish submarines equipped with this modern, high-powered torpedo will be able to perform missions more effectively, enhancing both national defense capabilities and contributing to regional stability.
