BREAKING NEWS
Patriot and SAMP/T air defense systems are being evaluated within Turkey's defense requirements framework. Defense Minister Yaşar Güler, ahead of the NATO Heads of State and Government Summit scheduled for July 7-8, 2026 in Ankara, emphasized Turkey's commitment to strengthening air defense infrastructure. Minister Güler stressed that all available options are being carefully examined and that defense spending will feature prominently on the summit agenda.
The SAMP/T NG system, jointly developed by Italy and France, is built around the Thales Ground Fire 300 or Leonardo Kronos Grand Mobile High Power radar. The system features a fully digital AESA radar architecture, providing 360-degree coverage without requiring mechanical repositioning. Detection range for standard air targets is assessed at approximately 350 km or greater. SAMP/T NG possesses the capacity to simultaneously track over 100 targets and guide multiple missiles in parallel.
The Patriot system has undergone significant evolution with the introduction of the LTAMDS radar, replacing the AN/MPQ-65 radar. LTAMDS provides full 360-degree coverage and can detect targets beyond 400 km depending on altitude and radar cross-section. The system maintains a target tracking capacity exceeding 100 targets. However, many operational Patriot systems remain dependent on older sector-scanning radars.
The SAMP/T NG employs the Aster 30 B1NT missile, designed to counter both aerodynamic and ballistic threats. Engagement range against aircraft and cruise missiles ranges from 120 to 150 km. Effective range against ballistic missiles is estimated between 25 and 35 km. Patriot utilizes two distinct missile types: PAC-2 GEM T and PAC-3 MSE. PAC-2 GEM T provides approximately 160 km range against aircraft, while PAC-3 MSE is optimized for ballistic missile defense, employing direct-hit kinetic kill mechanisms.
Operationally, SAMP/T NG offers a robust solution for nations seeking flexibility and simplified force structures. The use of a single missile type provides operators with engagement flexibility against any target. Patriot delivers higher specialization in ballistic missile defense, with PAC-3 MSE missiles proving more effective at higher altitudes and against complex ballistic trajectories. Patriot provides reliability advantages through decades of operational experience and extensive allied networks, while SAMP/T NG, though technologically advanced, remains in the operational validation phase.
