The Defense Industry Agency (SSB) has published a Request for Information (RFI) aimed at developing indigenous hunter/interceptor drone systems to counter NATO Class 1 and Class 2 mini, micro, and tactical UAV threats. According to the announcement, the initiative seeks to identify domestic capabilities and expertise among companies, institutions, universities, research centers, and organizations to develop Interceptor/Hunter UAV Integrated Systems with a Technology Readiness Level (TRL) of at least 6.
The Defense Industry Agency plays a pivotal role in Turkey's defense strategy. Its core responsibilities include coordinating defense industry projects, facilitating technology transfer, increasing localization rates, and developing indigenous production capabilities. SSB supports research and development investments in the defense sector to enhance the international competitiveness of Turkish defense industry. In this context, the published RFI represents a strategic step to assess the sector's current capacity and future potential.
Hunter/interceptor drone systems represent a modern component of air defense architecture. These systems are expected to neutralize target UAVs through one or several methods, including collision, fragmentation-based destruction, or net capture. Such systems provide rapid and effective defense solutions against small UAVs operating at low altitudes and short ranges. The Technology Readiness Level 6 criterion indicates that systems must have advanced beyond the prototype stage.
Turkish defense industry has achieved globally recognized successes in the UAV field. Companies such as Baykar and TUSAŞ have secured significant positions in the international market with platforms like the Bayraktar TB2 and AKINCI. However, protection systems against emerging threats to these platforms are equally important. Interceptor drone systems will complement existing air defense systems, contributing to the establishment of an integrated defense architecture. This development will increase localization rates, reduce imports, and decrease technology dependency.
The global defense industry demonstrates growing interest in interceptor drone systems. Israel's Harop system has proven its effectiveness in operations conducted in Ukraine. A Turkish interceptor drone system developed to NATO standards could meet regional security needs and represent a product with high export potential. SSB's publication of this RFI constitutes a strategic move toward ensuring Turkey's independence in air defense technology.
