BREAKING NEWS
Türkiye’s defense industry is preparing to introduce a significant new capability in medium-caliber weapon systems. The 30x113 mm medium-caliber cannon, expected to enter the inventory of security forces, stands out with its ability to deliver effective long-range fire against hardened targets such as armor steel and reinforced concrete. This capability is set to enhance the operational effectiveness of land forces as well as manned and unmanned platforms operating in close defense roles.
Speaking at the 5th Global Strategies Conference on Defense and Aerospace Industry held in Antalya, representatives of CANiK emphasized that medium-caliber cannons will become increasingly visible on the battlefield starting in 2026. Designed for Close-In Defense Systems (CIDS) and Short-Range Air Defense missions, these solutions combine advanced weaponry with remote-controlled weapon stations and sophisticated engagement algorithms. During recent demonstrations, high-destructive dual-purpose ammunition was used to successfully showcase the system’s effects on armor steel and concrete structures.
Beyond ground targets, the new-generation medium-caliber cannons are also positioned as a cost-effective solution against the rapidly growing drone threat. According to officials, aerial targets can be neutralized at a cost of approximately 500–750 USD per engagement, significantly reducing reliance on expensive missile-based air defense systems. Thanks to artificial intelligence–supported software, the system calculates the target’s probable future position rather than its current location, enabling higher hit probability and efficient ammunition use.
Projects aimed at integrating the VENOM LR automatic cannon into the inventories of Turkish security institutions are currently ongoing, with two different authorities evaluating the system. Internationally, agreements have already been signed with five countries, and deliveries are expected to accelerate as medium-caliber ammunition production capacity expands worldwide. With these developments, the 30x113 mm medium-caliber cannon is anticipated to become a prominent element of modern battlefield defense throughout 2026.
