BREAKING NEWS
Türkiye’s defense industry has taken a significant leap in firepower technology. TR Mekatronik, a joint venture between TUSAŞ and Sarsılmaz, unveiled its 6-barrel 20mm nose-mounted gun for the first time at IDEF 2025 in Istanbul. Designed for the ATAK attack helicopter and next-generation air defense systems, the new weapon aims to deliver unmatched fire support capability with a firing rate of several thousand rounds per minute.
TR Mekatronik General Manager Fatih Çevik stated that the company had previously localized the 3-barrel gun system used on ATAK helicopters, marking an early milestone in Türkiye’s weapon integration capability. “The current system could fire 750 rounds per minute,” Çevik said. “Our new 6-barrel system reaches 2,000 rounds per minute, and we aim to achieve 3,000 or even 4,500 in future iterations.”
The system’s design not only focuses on higher firing speed but also on enhanced reaction time, improved balance, and increased operational safety. Using cutting-edge servo motors and advanced turret technologies, TR Mekatronik integrated the gun with ATAK’s pilot helmet sight system — enabling instantaneous target tracking and engagement with precision accuracy.
According to Çevik, the new 6-barrel gun is also being developed for short-range air defense platforms, where its high rate of fire will be particularly effective against drone and UAV swarms. He emphasized that the system’s adaptability and lightweight structure make it ideal for Türkiye’s layered air defense network, providing both flexibility and superior engagement performance.
With this innovation, TR Mekatronik not only strengthens the ATAK’s combat capabilities but also elevates Türkiye into the ranks of nations developing advanced multi-barrel air defense and aircraft gun systems. The success of the 6-barrel 20mm gun demonstrates the growing maturity of Türkiye’s indigenous weapon technology ecosystem.
