BREAKING NEWS
Türkiye’s defense industry has achieved another significant milestone with the successful live warhead test of the national cruise missile SOM-J. According to a statement shared by Minister of Industry and Technology Mehmet Fatih Kacır, the missile struck its designated target with full accuracy during the latest firing test. This development is considered an important indicator of the level reached by Türkiye in indigenous precision-guided munitions and advanced strike capabilities. Developed under the signature of TÜBİTAK SAGE, SOM-J stands out as one of the country’s most critical next-generation missile programs.
SOM-J has been specifically designed for high-value and critical strike missions, thanks to its low-altitude flight profile, high maneuverability, and low observability features. These capabilities make the missile highly effective in contested environments where survivability and precision are essential. Among its prominent technological features are an imaging infrared seeker head, automatic target recognition, and post-launch control capability. In addition, its network-enabled warfare architecture allows SOM-J to operate in a more flexible and modern combat environment, increasing its effectiveness against time-sensitive and complex targets.
Another key strength of SOM-J is its multi-role engagement capability. The missile is designed to engage land targets as well as stationary and moving surface targets at sea. This broad operational flexibility makes it a valuable force multiplier for the Turkish Armed Forces. The armor-piercing warhead further enhances its strike power, enabling it to neutralize hardened and strategic targets with high precision. With these features, SOM-J is expected to play a major role in strengthening Türkiye’s deterrence and operational reach in future military scenarios.
Efforts are also continuing to integrate SOM-J with Türkiye’s indigenous combat platforms, particularly the national combat aircraft KAAN and the unmanned fighter aircraft KIZILELMA. This integration process is seen as a critical step in combining national munitions with domestic platforms to create a fully independent strike ecosystem. The latest successful test not only demonstrates the maturity of the missile itself, but also reflects the engineering strength, technological competence, and determination of Türkiye’s defense industry. As emphasized by Minister Kacır, the achievement is the result of the dedicated work of engineers, technicians, and all stakeholders involved in the project.
