BREAKING NEWS
The TOLGA Close-Range Air Defense System, developed by MKE, achieved successful results during its initial deployment at the Fire Free-2026 exercise conducted in Polatlı. The system, equipped with a new 20 kW (4 × 5 kW) fiber laser weapon module, achieved a direct hit on a drone target at 760 meters distance.
The TOLGA platform, designed by MKE, provides a multi-functional defense solution against air, ground, and maritime threats. The laser weapon system is fully integrated into the TOLGA Close-Range Air Defense System's detection, tracking, and command-control infrastructure. The system was developed following an "Effective – Simple – Cost-effective (ESC)" approach, adhering to cost-efficiency principles. The laser module offers three distinct engagement modes against air threats: dazzling (temporary blindness) at 4,500–2,500 meters range, blinding (permanent blindness) at 2,500–1,500 meters range, and structural damage to target fuselage at 1,500–100 meters range.
The TOLGA system's turret was developed using linear motor technology, converting electrical energy directly into linear motion. This technology enables 360-degree movement capability and rapid tracking with high precision against detected air threats. During the Fire Free-2026 exercise, in addition to the laser module, MKE-produced 12.7 mm, 20 mm fixed and vehicle-mounted gun turrets, as well as a 20 mm twin-barrel revolver weapon system, conducted live-fire operations. Each 20 mm weapon achieving 1,500 rounds per minute, with two weapons operating from the same turret, creates a total capacity of 3,000 rounds per minute.
The TOLGA Close-Range Air Defense System integrates various sensors and electronic systems within an integrated defense architecture. The system incorporates the GÖKBÖRÜ AESA radar, acoustic detection system, electro-optical sensors, electronic countermeasure system, and advanced command-control infrastructure. These components enable coordinated response against detected and tracked air threats through electronic countermeasures, laser, and weapon systems. Anti-drone munitions developed by MKE (for 12.7 mm, 20 mm, and 35 mm calibers) support physical neutralization of threats.
From a Turkish defense industry perspective, the TOLGA system represents a significant example of indigenous technology and engineering capability in close-range air defense. The system provides a multi-layered defense approach against drones and asymmetric air threats, designed to address ground forces' air defense requirements. The integration of laser weapon technology adds a complementary capability to conventional weapon systems, enhancing overall system effectiveness.
