Türkiye’s defense industry continues to advance with innovative unmanned systems, and HAVELSAN has introduced its latest achievement: the Kapgan heavy-class unmanned ground vehicle (UGV). Showcased for the first time at the SAHA EXPO exhibition, Kapgan has already drawn significant attention for its advanced features and versatile design. Veysel Ataoğlu, Project Manager for HAVELSAN’s Unmanned Air and Ground Vehicles, explained that the experience gained from the earlier Barkan project played a key role in Kapgan’s development.
Weighing 1.4 tons, Kapgan can carry up to 600 kilograms of payload. Its onboard weapon system has a range of 3 kilometers and an effective range of 2 kilometers, with the ability to penetrate 25 mm of armor from 800 meters. These features make it a formidable asset for providing strong fire support on the battlefield.
Kapgan was designed with insights from current global conflict zones, incorporating lessons learned into its advanced capabilities. The system stands out with digital unit integration, autonomous mission execution, GPS-independent navigation, and resistance to electronic warfare—all crucial for modern and future combat environments.
According to plans, Kapgan will complete its mobility and firing tests in 2023 and achieve GPS-independent mission capability by the end of the year. Beyond its armed configuration, the vehicle can also be adapted for casualty evacuation, ammunition transport, and reconnaissance-surveillance missions, highlighting its versatility. HAVELSAN envisions Kapgan as a strategic system that will leave its mark on the battlefields of the future.
