BREAKING NEWS
Türkiye’s defense industry drew international attention at SAHA EXPO 2022 Istanbul with the unveiling of the GIDS (GST Smart Defense System). Developed by engineers at Gürbağ Defense Technologies, GIDS is a highly sophisticated system that integrates radar, electro-optic modules, a hydrogen-propelled launcher, and advanced communication systems. The company’s Deputy General Manager, Mertkan Acar, emphasized that GIDS is a one-of-a-kind solution with unmatched capabilities on the global stage.
The system consists of four main components: radar/optical unit, communication antenna, launcher, and control console. Its most groundbreaking feature is the hydrogen-powered launcher, which offers significantly greater efficiency than traditional launchers. Not only can it be reused multiple times, but it also reduces the shock experienced by the munitions during launch, lowering the risk of malfunction. With the ability to fire every 5 seconds, the system ensures continuous support for security forces while maintaining cost-effectiveness.
GIDS can detect vehicles at a range of 10 kilometers and human targets at 5 kilometers, while also providing an effective defense against drone threats—a growing concern on modern battlefields. Furthermore, the hydrogen-propelled launcher is adaptable to various types of munitions, giving security forces operational flexibility and enhanced capabilities.
Expected to be fielded this year, GIDS will significantly strengthen air defense capacity and improve protection for critical security zones. With its high export potential, the system is also being developed into multiple variants, positioning Türkiye as a stronger player in the global defense technology market.
