BREAKING NEWS
Greece is evaluating advanced electronic warfare and self-defense solutions from U.S. defense contractors to strengthen its F-16 fighter fleet. Most recently, on October 20, 2026, an L3Harris delegation briefed Greece's Air Force on developments in the Viper Shield system. This was not the first such presentation; L3Harris conducted similar briefings on October 2, 2023, October 2, 2024, and July 1, 2025. Similarly, Northrop Grumman presented the AN/ALQ-257 IVEWS electronic warfare system to Greece's Air Force Command on September 13, 2022, and again on March 5, 2026.
The AN/ALQ-257 Integrated Viper Electronic Warfare Suite (IVEWS) is designed to equip F-16 aircraft with electronic warfare capabilities equivalent to fifth-generation fighter jets. Northrop Grumman's ultra-wideband system significantly enhances aircraft survivability in dense and contested electromagnetic spectrum environments. The system can detect, identify, and counter advanced radio frequency (RF) threats. In 2021, a Northrop Grumman test aircraft successfully conducted flights with IVEWS and AN/APG-83 SABR systems during the Northern Lightning joint exercise in a dense electromagnetic spectrum environment.
The AN/ALQ-254(V)1 Viper Shield is a fully digital electronic warfare system designed to enhance F-16 aircraft survivability against advanced radar and electronic threats. Engineered specifically for integration on F-16 Block 70/72 aircraft, the system is also compatible with various F-16 configurations. Developed by L3Harris, Viper Shield aims to increase aircraft survivability and mission success in contested electromagnetic environments. The system can detect, identify, and counter advanced radio frequency (RF) threats using digital electronic countermeasures.
Viper Shield's digital radar warning receiver (DRWR) is designed to operate integrally with the F-16's AN/APG-83 SABR AESA radar. The system employs Digital Radio Frequency Memory (DRFM)-based electronic jamming capability to conduct electronic attack against advanced radar threats. The system can be integrated into new-production F-16 Block 70/72 aircraft as well as Block 40 and Block 50 configurations. Compatible with two-seat F-16D variants, Viper Shield can also be employed on older F-16 blocks in an external pod configuration, enabling electronic warfare capability enhancement without major structural modifications.
L3Harris is offering the Viper Shield system to U.S. international allies, with export opportunities available. The company is developing AN/ALQ-254(V)1 and (V)2 variants in cooperation with Lockheed Martin and the U.S. Air Force. Northrop Grumman's IVEWS system is the sole electronic warfare system included in the U.S. Air Force's official F-16 fleet modernization program and is available for export. Turkey's F-16 acquisition package is known to include the AN/ALQ-257 system.
