The Presidency of the Republic of Türkiye’s Directorate of Communications has released a landmark publication titled “From Roots to Horizons: The Rise of the Turkish Defense Industry.” The book brings together the historical evolution, institutional memory, and future vision of Türkiye’s defense ecosystem, offering readers an in-depth understanding of how national defense has become a driver of both technological advancement and strategic autonomy.
The publication emphasizes that the Turkish defense industry is not merely a military domain but also a strategic pillar of national security, economic development, and peace-oriented diplomacy. It explores the transformation of Türkiye’s defense capabilities—from early independence efforts to the development of indigenous systems—and how this transformation reflects the country’s broader vision of technological sovereignty and innovation.
In the book’s preface, President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan writes: “We set out with a dream of a Türkiye that forges its own cannons, builds its own ships, develops its own UAVs, missiles, radar systems, satellites, software, and munitions. That dream is now a reality. The National Technology Initiative we launched years ago is not merely an industrial revolution but a mobilization of independence and future—one that restores our nation’s confidence and inspires generations to look to the future with hope.”
This statement forms the thematic foundation of the book, highlighting Türkiye’s success in transforming strategy into technology and technology into tangible products. It documents how indigenous solutions have bolstered the capabilities of the Turkish Armed Forces (TSK) while also enhancing Türkiye’s global export and cooperation potential.
The book also examines the contributions of key defense institutions, private contractors, SMEs, universities, and research centers within a unified ecosystem. By linking Türkiye’s technological innovation to its geopolitical and economic strategies, it positions the country as a global actor capable of sustainable, tech-driven deterrence and competitiveness. With its analytical and narrative depth, “From Roots to Horizons” stands as a key reference for policymakers, researchers, and readers seeking to understand Türkiye’s defense transformation and its impact on the global stage.
