Diehl Defence has developed the Cobra 600 system, representing a new approach to integrating air-to-air missiles onto unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) platforms. Also known as the Airborne Launch and Attack System (AirLAS), this platform was publicly displayed for the first time at the ILA Berlin aviation fair held in Germany's capital. The system is built on a jet-powered UAV design capable of carrying IRIS-T missiles, introducing a novel operational concept to the defense sector.

The Cobra 600's fundamental principle relies on the UAV platform transporting and positioning the missile across considerable distances. This "missile taxi" approach is achieved through a standard pylon system also used on Eurofighter combat aircraft. The platform is supplied by Polaris Raumflugzeuge, a German aerospace company, and features a modified flying-wing design with vertical stabilizers at the wing tips. The displayed prototype is powered by a pair of JetCat-P1000-PRO turbojet engines, each providing approximately 9 kilograms of maximum thrust.

With a missile mounted, the Cobra 600 achieves an operational range of approximately 400 kilometers. Considering that the IRIS-T SLM variant has a ground-launched range of roughly 40 kilometers and the SLS variant approximately 13 kilometers, the system provides significant operational advantages for these missiles. Cobra 600 will be capable of conducting patrol missions in designated areas while awaiting threat emergence or executing combat air patrol (CAP) operations. However, in its current configuration, the system lacks an integrated sensor for target detection beyond the missile's standard imaging infrared seeker.

A similar concept has been observed previously in Russia. Imagery shared on social media platforms indicated that Geran-2, also known as Shahed-136 kamikaze UAVs, were equipped with short-range air-to-air missiles. These developments demonstrate an expanding trend toward increasingly sophisticated UAV applications in air defense. The Cobra 600 program was initiated last year, with Diehl Defence's expertise in the defense sector and specialization in IRIS-T missile systems playing a central role in the project's development.

From the perspective of Turkish defense industry, the integration of missiles onto UAV platforms represents an area of interest for domestic manufacturers such as Baykar and TUSAŞ. Platforms including Bayraktar TB2 and AKINCI have already achieved integration of various weapon systems. Air-to-air missile integration, similar to Cobra 600, expands UAV capabilities in the air defense role and offers new possibilities in layered defense system design. Development of such technologies continues to be an area closely monitored by the Turkish defense sector.
