BREAKING NEWS
Türkiye’s defense industry has taken another major step forward in unmanned systems with the introduction of Baykar’s new K2 Kamikaze UAV. Developed with a focus on cost-effective defense solutions, the K2 has been designed as a national and original platform that combines autonomy, artificial intelligence and formation flight capabilities. During recent tests, five K2 UAVs took off from Baykar’s Flight Training and Test Center in Keşan and carried out a series of multi-aircraft trials over the Saros Gulf for two consecutive days. In these tests, the platforms successfully performed “echelon,” “line,” and “V” formation flights, demonstrating their ability to maintain precise positioning and mission integrity within a coordinated swarm structure.
One of the most notable aspects of the K2 is its AI-enabled swarm synergy. Thanks to advanced onboard software, sensors and autonomous control systems, each aircraft can determine its own position relative to the others and adapt dynamically within the formation. Baykar also stated that the K2 is capable of executing more advanced tactical formations such as the “Turan” and “wall” formations. These capabilities suggest that the platform could play an important role in future high-intensity combat environments where coordinated multi-UAV operations may become decisive. In addition, Baykar is working on a future version of the system that will be able to release its munition on target and then return to base for reuse. This concept introduces a new approach to the expendable loitering munition category by reducing operational costs while maintaining combat effectiveness.
From a technical standpoint, the K2 stands out as the largest kamikaze UAV in its class. The platform has a maximum takeoff weight of 800 kilograms and can carry a 200-kilogram warhead payload, giving it a significantly higher destructive capability than many comparable systems. With a range exceeding 2,000 kilometers, a speed of over 200 km/h and an endurance of more than 13 hours, the K2 is not limited to tactical missions alone but is also suitable for long-range strategic operations. Its ability to take off and land on short runways provides additional logistical flexibility, making it easier to deploy in different operational theaters.
Another key strength of the K2 is its ability to operate in heavily contested electronic warfare environments. The UAV’s navigation architecture has been designed to function even when GNSS signals are denied or jammed. Using its gimbal-mounted camera and an additional night-vision capable camera under the fuselage, the platform can visually scan the terrain and estimate its position independently. This enables the K2 to continue autonomous flight and reach its target even in GPS-denied conditions. Its EO/IR gimbal camera not only provides reconnaissance and surveillance capability, but also supports visual target lock for precision engagement. In addition, the K2 is equipped with both line-of-sight (LOS) and beyond-line-of-sight (BLOS) satellite data link capabilities, greatly enhancing operational flexibility. Considering Baykar’s strong export performance in recent years, the K2 is expected to attract significant interest both from the Turkish Armed Forces and from international defense markets.
