BREAKING NEWS
The US Army has officially received the first H-60Mx Black Hawk helicopter configured with advanced autonomy features that allow it to operate either with a pilot on board or in a pilot-optional mode. Described as an Optimally Piloted Vehicle (OPV), this next-generation helicopter represents a significant milestone in the evolution of military aviation, where automation, survivability, and operational flexibility are becoming increasingly important. According to the announcement made on 19 March 2026, the aircraft has now entered an advanced operational testing phase, during which Army pilots and engineers will evaluate its real-world performance.
At the heart of the H-60Mx’s new capability is the technology developed under DARPA’s Aircrew Labor In-Cockpit Automation System (ALIAS) programme. The purpose of ALIAS has been to create a flexible automation architecture that can be integrated into existing aircraft to reduce pilot workload and improve mission execution. Sikorsky, a Lockheed Martin company, partnered with DARPA throughout the programme and used the effort to develop its MATRIX autonomy system, which now serves as the technological foundation for the OPV Black Hawk. After years of demonstrations on both military and civilian platforms, the system has matured into an operationally relevant solution that is now ready for formal military assessment.
The delivered OPV kit includes the MATRIX Autonomy Mission Manager and a Software Development Kit (SDK), enabling integration with third-party applications, new mission software, and future sensor packages. This open and scalable architecture is designed to support continuous upgrades and rapid adaptation for a wide variety of operational requirements. Another major change is the replacement of the helicopter’s traditional mechanical flight controls with an advanced fly-by-wire system. This electronic control architecture improves stability, handling, and flight precision, especially in degraded visual environments or complex mission conditions where pilot workload is naturally higher.
Over the coming months, the US Army will carry out extensive trials focused on remote ground control, autonomous mission execution, and the overall impact of the system on soldier safety and mission effectiveness. The H-60Mx will also serve as the primary test platform for the Army’s Strategic Autonomy Flight Enabler (SAFE) programme, which aims to develop a scalable autonomy package for broader integration across the entire Black Hawk fleet and future vertical lift aircraft. Beyond the military domain, the State of Texas is also contributing to the maturation of autonomous helicopter operations through long-term research involving modified UH-60L helicopters for wildfire response and other public-service missions. Combined with Sikorsky’s earlier 2024 contract to integrate Matrix autonomy into an experimental fly-by-wire UH-60M Black Hawk, this latest delivery highlights how autonomy is steadily moving from a research concept to a practical operational capability in modern rotorcraft aviation.
