BREAKING NEWS
The Turkish Armed Forces (TSK) are enhancing their armored units with comprehensive modernization projects, aiming to increase battlefield superiority. The Leopard 2A4, M60T, and M60A3 tanks—cornerstones of Türkiye’s armored inventory—are being upgraded with domestic technologies to meet the demands of modern warfare. These tanks, frequently deployed in cross-border operations, are receiving significant capability improvements through locally developed systems.
According to defense industry researcher Anıl Şahin, the M60T Sabra tanks were modernized and redesignated as M60TM, with several additional systems improving their operational performance. Likewise, the Leopard 2A4 tanks are undergoing upgrades with ROKETSAN’s T1ZIRH armor package, which enhances their protection levels and increases overall survivability on the battlefield.
The modernization program also equips these tanks with state-of-the-art active protection systems developed by ASELSAN. The PULAT system, introduced under the FIRAT M60T modernization project, provides effective defense against anti-tank guided missiles by intercepting incoming threats. Meanwhile, the AKKOR Active Protection System offers 360-degree protection, detecting and neutralizing hostile munitions in real time. These advancements significantly improve the tanks’ ability to withstand modern anti-armor threats.
Through these upgrades, TSK’s tank fleet gains not only stronger protection but also enhanced operational flexibility and combat readiness. The use of domestic and indigenous technologies underscores Türkiye’s growing self-reliance in defense production while strengthening the deterrence and battlefield effectiveness of its armored forces. With these advancements, Türkiye continues to project power regionally while ensuring its armored units remain resilient and modern.
