BREAKING NEWS
The Turkish Air Force is advancing preparations for the acquisition of second-hand Eurofighter Typhoon fighter jets from Qatar to meet operational requirements. According to statements from the Ministry of National Defence, bilateral delegations held meetings in August and September to discuss aircraft specifications, pilot and maintenance personnel training programs, and technical and logistical support arrangements for aircraft operations and maintenance.
The Eurofighter Typhoon is a multi-role combat aircraft jointly developed and produced by the United Kingdom, Germany, Italy, and Spain. The system features advanced avionics, powerful radar capabilities, and high maneuverability designed to provide air superiority in accordance with NATO standards. The aircraft is capable of performing air-to-air and air-to-ground missions and is equipped with modern electronic warfare systems. The Eurofighter platform will contribute significantly to Turkey's existing air defense and strike capabilities, offering operational flexibility and multi-role functionality that complements current defense posture.
This acquisition initiative strengthens the Turkish Air Force's air defense and strike capabilities as part of the national defense strategy. The second-hand aircraft sourced from Qatar will function as a complementary system alongside Turkey's F-16 and F-35 platforms. The comprehensive approach to pilot training, maintenance infrastructure, and spare parts support ensures long-term operational sustainability and mission readiness.
Turkish pilot training for the Eurofighter formally commenced in August 2026. The training program consists of two phases: the initial phase covered terminology and theoretical instruction, after which pilots transitioned to direct flight training. Flight training will continue for 8 months, and pilots who successfully complete this phase will proceed to a 3-month Instructor Pilot Training course. The training program is not limited to a single cohort; Turkish pilots will continue to receive training in the United Kingdom in successive batches.
In the global defense industry, the acquisition of second-hand fighter aircraft is a common practice. Many NATO member states employ similar platforms to address operational requirements. The Eurofighter Typhoon maintains a broad user base across Europe and the Middle East, with established international technical support and spare parts availability. Turkey's selection of this platform represents a strategic step to maintain air superiority in the regional security environment and modernize existing air force capabilities in line with contemporary operational demands.
