BREAKING NEWS
The U.S. Army demonstrated its integrated air defense approach against unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) during the Skyfall II Exercise held on October 5 at Grafenwöhr Training Area in Bavaria. The exercise featured live-fire operations with SGT STOUT short-range air defense systems and AH-64 Apache attack helicopters, while ground-based radars and aircraft platforms conducted real-time targeting data exchange.
The exercise involved the 5th Battalion of the 52nd Air Defense Artillery Brigade, the 4th Air Defense Artillery Regiment, and the 12th Combat Aviation Brigade. During the training, air defense units operated SGT STOUT vehicles and Sentinel radars while Apache helicopters performed operational roles. The primary objective was to demonstrate how targets detected by one platform could be tracked and engaged by another through established data-sharing networks.
The SGT STOUT system is a short-range air defense solution developed by the U.S. Army on the Stryker armored vehicle platform. The system provides mobile air defense for armored and mechanized units and is effective against UAVs, helicopters, and low-altitude aircraft. The platform is equipped with Stinger and Hellfire missiles, a 30 mm cannon, machine guns, and radar in its turret. The Sentinel radar used in the exercise detects and tracks low-altitude aircraft and UAVs, transmitting acquired information to air defense units.
The 5th Battalion, 4th Air Defense Artillery Regiment, was the first U.S. Army unit to receive SGT STOUT systems. The unit received its initial systems in April 2021 and achieved full operational capability by late 2022. The system was subsequently integrated into the inventories of units stationed at Fort Sill in Oklahoma, Fort Hood in Texas, and Fort Bragg in North Carolina. This widespread distribution reflects the system's critical role in U.S. Army air defense strategy.
The U.S. Army is also developing lighter short-range air defense solutions for units without Stryker vehicles. The M-SHORAD Increment 4 under development is planned as a system that can be mounted on light vehicles and integrated onto tracked platforms. This initiative demonstrates the U.S. Army's efforts to establish a multi-layered defense architecture against evolving UAV threats.
