The CAm. ROMAN Corvette, constructed under ASFAT prime contractor management at Istanbul Shipyard Command, was delivered to the Romanian Navy on 20 June 2026. Four months after delivery, on 6 October 2026, the vessel participated in training exercises conducted in the Black Sea, executing its first firing drills since entering operational service. During the exercise, the corvette successfully conducted live-fire operations with the MKE-produced DENIZHAN naval gun and the Canik-manufactured TARGAN UKSS weapon system.
The CAm. ROMAN Corvette features a length of 99.5 metres, a displacement of 2,300 tonnes, and accommodates a crew of 104 personnel. The vessel is powered by a combined diesel-electric propulsion system capable of achieving a maximum speed of 24 knots (45 km/h). The corvette possesses an operational range of 8,300 kilometres and can sustain continuous operations for 21 days. Designed within the offshore patrol vessel class, the platform was engineered to operate effectively in the demanding maritime conditions of the Black Sea and incorporates modern sensor-weapon integration architecture.
The training exercise conducted by the Romanian Navy encompassed comprehensive crew development across multiple operational domains. During operations in the Black Sea, personnel received practical instruction in search and rescue operations, air defence measures, anti-surface warfare tactics, and maritime navigation security. The exercise schedule also included training modules on neutralizing unmanned aerial systems and unmanned maritime vehicles. This comprehensive training regimen demonstrates the vessel's and crew's operational readiness across diverse maritime scenarios.
Turkey's delivery of a combat vessel to Romania represents a significant milestone in Turkish defence industry exports. The transaction executed by ASFAT demonstrates Turkey's capability to supply naval platforms to NATO and European Union member states. This achievement validates the international recognition of Turkish defence industrial firms' shipbuilding and systems integration competencies. The cooperation model established reflects commitment to trust-based, sustainable, and technology-intensive partnerships with allied nations.
Romania's acquisition decision was driven by urgent requirements to protect its economic interests in the Black Sea. The nation prioritized rapid expansion of maritime security capabilities to safeguard the Neptun Deep natural gas platform, scheduled for operational status in 2027. The delivery of the CAm. ROMAN Corvette represents a strategic step in enhancing Romania's Black Sea maritime security capabilities. The vessel will contribute to regional stability and protection of maritime commerce in the region.
